Terms, in plain words.

Slate is a subscription reading app for children roughly 2–10 years old. It turns a parent’s own phone into a single-purpose reading space: a library of classic tales told for a child’s age, some games earned by reading, designed so that ending Slate Time takes your phone’s own lock. We license you the app for your own family’s use; we don’t sell it to you.

You sign in with your phone number and a one-time code we text you. That number is the account — your subscription is held against it, so signing in with it on any phone, Android or iPhone, gives you what you’ve paid for. Keep access to the number safe: anyone who can receive its codes can reach the account.

You must be an adult, and the parent or guardian of the child using Slate, to hold an account.

Slate starts with a 7-day free trial — all of it, no card. After the trial, a subscription is currently ₹149 a month or ₹999 a year, covering every child in your household. The exact price is always shown before you pay, and the price shown when you subscribe is the one that applies. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. Prices can change, but never for a period you have already paid for, and we will tell you before a renewal at a new price.

In the app, payment is handled by the app store — Google Play Billing on Android, Apple’s In-App Purchase on iPhone and iPad. Those purchases are also governed by that store’s own terms, which sit alongside these. On Apple devices, Apple’s Standard End User Licence Agreement applies to the app, and where it and these terms disagree about the licence itself, Apple’s wins. Apple is not a party to these terms and is not responsible for Slate, but may enforce them as a third-party beneficiary.

On this website, payment is handled by Razorpay. You type your card, UPI or bank details into Razorpay, never into Slate — your card number, CVV, UPI PIN and bank login never reach us. What we keep is your subscription’s state and the receipt Razorpay sends us, which can name a masked card or your UPI ID, as the privacy policy sets out.

You can cancel at any time. A store subscription is cancelled in that store’s own subscription settings — we don’t have a way to do it for you from inside the app. A subscription bought on this website is cancelled here, or by writing to us. Either way, cancelling stops the next renewal and you keep Slate for the rest of the period you have paid for.

Refunds for a store purchase follow that store’s refund policy and are decided by the store, not by us. For a purchase made on this website, write to us — where something went wrong at our end we will make it right.

You can delete your account from inside the app, at Settings → Delete account, or by writing to us. Deleting removes your account and everything held against your number on our servers, and it cannot be undone. If that number bought a plan through a store or used a free trial, one small record stays behind — a scrambled form of the number with the store reference and trial it was tied to, so a plan cannot be claimed by another number and a trial cannot be taken twice; the privacy policy sets out exactly what it holds and how long we keep it. Deleting does not cancel a Play Store or App Store subscription — cancel that with the store first, or it will keep billing.

Nothing about your child is ever collected or transmitted — no profile, no progress file, no behavioural record. That is a property of how Slate is built, not a setting, and the privacy policy sets it out in full. You are responsible for supervising your child’s use of the phone Slate runs on, including how long they use it.

Slate is for one household. Don’t resell or share access, don’t copy or redistribute the stories, narration or artwork, and don’t try to break, reverse-engineer or work around the app or our servers. The content and the app remain ours or our licensors’.

We work hard to keep Slate available and correct, but we can’t promise it will be uninterrupted or faultless. Slate is provided as it is. Nothing here limits any right you have under Indian consumer law, and nothing limits our liability for fraud or for anything the law does not allow us to limit. Otherwise, our liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

We may update these terms — if we do, we will change the date above and, for anything material, tell you in the app. Continuing to use Slate after that means you accept the new terms. You can stop using Slate at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and will tell you why unless the law prevents it.

Slate is operated by Occupy Mars Private Limited, a company registered in Jaipur, India. These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of Jaipur, Rajasthan have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
